Different Breeds - Thomas Kearnes A Hearts On Fire Review TWO STARS--I've never been more unsure where to begin a review. How about I give you fair warning first? One, this is NOT a romance. And most importantly, two, this story ends with suicide. So if that is a trigger, you might want to skip this story. The story is told from a shallow, drug abusing, random hookup having(granted Derek is in an open relationship), good looking twenty year old Derek. He's out of town for a family wedding and hooks up with Doug, a man he recently met online. Doug brings to a party at a local loner/needy man with awesome dope, Leonard. Leonard pathetically tries to make a connection with the uninterested Derek, even ignoring the fact Derek really isn't more than a coke whore who wants to have a good time. He's in a sort of relationship with Blake. He doesn't do meaningful. Derek has his coke and sex from Doug. He turns down Leonard. Regretfully, the ends in tragedy.Truthfully, I'm unsure what the point of the story was. Is it supposed to be a metaphor? Should we condemn vapid party boys? Frown on online hookup sites? Befriend local lonely people? Maybe there was a point and I missed it. Maybe I am not deep enough to get it. Or I am searching too hard for some sort of meaning. *shrugs* But the story definitely brought me down. I was never a fan of metaphors.
