The kink part is typical Sean Michael fare-pretty damn hot.
But...
I hesitate with books that use BDSM as a tool to heal someone who is damaged especially mentally. Yes, you can argue that it could be used on case by case basis and if done with guidance it can help. But Mal was shot, he has scattered thoughts, seemed to be addicted (beginning stages) to prescription drugs and somewhat of a brat. I love characters that are multifaceted but he was closer to bipolar. He was all over the place with his thought patterns, not to the point where he could be pitied. He was borderline annoying. I liked him best when he had a cock (or two) in him.
Burke and Darby (a licensed and practicing psychiatrist), they were not bad. I liked them (mostly). I wished there was maybe 30 more pages or so, to let the characters shine. The blurb was promising but the execution was not as solid as I would have liked. Maybe if Mal didn't try to be bratty, ungrateful, damaged, crazy, pitiful, sad, horny, stubborn all at the same time, I might have liked him more.
The story is good...mostly. It didn't reach its full potential in my opinion. I really do like the two Dom-one sub dynamic in menages.
